by Matt Rosoff on Oct 29, 2011, 2:24 PM Image via CrunchBase Back in August, Google chairman Eric Schmidt gave a speech to TV executives in Scotland where he explained how TV was evolving, and tried to convince them that it was futile to fight it. TV was getting more social and more mobile, he said, and content creators should embrace these changes if they want to continue getting paid. But he denied that Google itself was trying to compete directly with them. Here’s what he said about Google TV: When it launched, some in the US feared we aimed to compete with broadcasters or content creators. Actually our intent is the opposite. We seek to support the content industry by providing an open platform for the next generation of TV to evolve, the same way Android is an open platform for the next generation of mobile. And here’s what he said about getting into the content business: Some have suggested Google should invest directly in TV content. To argue that misunderstands a key point: Google is a technology company. We provide platforms for people to engage with content and, through automated software, we show ads next to content that owners have chosen to put up.  But we have neither the ambition nor the know-how to actually produce content on a large scale….But of course we are helping to fund content. What a difference a couple months make. Yesterday, Google made two major announcements that clearly signal its intentions to remake the TV business to its benefit. First, it unveiled a new version of Google TV, its platform for interactive next-generation TV. The entire point of Google TV 2 is that it presents all content in one interface regardless of source — when you look for comedy shows or movies, for instance, you get your cable shows, Netflix rentals, and (critically) YouTube videos all arranged next to one another. Google TV spokespeople were pretty explicit about the idea that it thinks TV is changing from a world of a few hundred channels to millions of “channels” available via the Web. And the number-one provider of web video content by far is YouTube. Then, yesterday evening Google announced that it was launching more than 100 new YouTube channels with exclusive content from big-name celebrities and news organizations. Google is directly funding this content with more than $100 million in advances, and it’s probably just the beginning. The company has also In other words, Google is seeding the explosion of video content on its own massively popular online video network, where it sells advertisements and makes money. Then, it’s providing an interface that puts that content on equal footing with the TV shows provided by the traditional TV industry, where Google’s presence is minimal. (Not for lack of trying — Google has a program called Google TV Ads that lets advertisers buy ads on traditional cable networks like CNN. So far, it does not make a material contribution to earnings, whereas YouTube is probably a billion-dollar business.) This is smart — Google needs new avenues of growth. It’s already managed to move huge amounts of advertising budget from other media (particularly print) online. Video is obviously migrating online as well. This is a big deal — but it wasn’t going to help anyone enrolling before 2014. Today, the President announced that he’s speeding up this program so it will affect students next year — helping over 1 million students. This will have huge consequences for people struggling to make their student loan payments. Sometimes, it can be hard to see how policy changes will actually affect your day-to-day life. Not the case with this one. These changes will make a real difference in helping millions of Americans get by month to month. We put together a video explaining how these changes will help Americans. Netflix and Transmedia Brandcasting as a Solution to the Dive.

Netflix is a great service suffering from its success and the squeeze of Content Owners. We need to rally around them to tell them what the customers want yet satisfy the Content Owner Royalty System. Transmedia Brandcasting achieves that. We need only show you how. Reed Good Luck as a customer and fan of the service just expanding to the UK will not stop the slide. They have Love Films and hate worse than we do paying for TV. Yet have mandatory fees/taxes for even having a TV in the House. I know I have lived there for 5 years.

Netflix’s growth over the last year is a sign that something is happening in the online video streaming business. We asked our Zintro experts to comment on what’s happening in the industry, how it might be changing, and what new thing might be coming our way in online video services. Jay O’Conner, CEO of World Colours Network Television and an expert in social media brandcasting and monetizing streaming video, says that Netflix and its nearest competitors will face challenges from a new breed of independent producers who are savvy enough to understand transmedia brandcasting and the relationship between social networked consumers and advertisers. Transmedia brandcasting involves optimizing brand narratives through multi-format, multimedia, and multi-device content and web services for mobile, print, packaging, signage, and satellite TV. “The company that can provide the technology, content, and mechanism to create a relationship from the audience to the advertiser to the brand will be the key player,” says O’Connor. “Companies like Netflix need to figure this out before Facebook and Google TV get there.  Otherwise, Netflix runs the risk of experiencing the same thing that Blockbuster did.” To stay competitive Netflix, YouTube’s online service with Sony Pictures, and Amazon’s On-Demand all need be looking at multi-format options. Within five years, online video providers will be gateways for independent producers to release more content, which is what Facebook Social Cinema and GoogleTV are moving toward, O’Connor says. Christophor Rick, an expert writer specializing in technology, new media and consumer electronics, a social media consultant, and CEO of Gamers Daily News, says that each of the cable operators is starting to work on their own customer-only streaming services; DiSH and DirecTV are going that way too. “It’s going to be a rapidly expanding market,” he says. But there are issues and concerns. “Netflix has 20,000 titles, but a lot of studios are shying away from them, afraid that they will turn into the Apple/iTunes of video and start dictating low prices, undercutting the potential profits of the studios,” says Rick. However, Rick points out that Netflix has a plan in place that it is beginning to implement: removing the broadcasters and studios from the equation and simply buying content directly. “Netflix has licensed one show (House of Cards), which they could turn around and sell first-air rights to one of the broadcasters if the creators allow it,” he says. This is how Netflix will survive, by cutting out the middle man and taking their place. Instead of buying rights to stream content from broadcasters, Netflix will buy it from the creators or buy all the rights and shop them around to broadcasters. “While it puts Netflix in direct competition with those they’re trying to license content from, it lets the industry know they’ve got cash to burn on new programs and are in the market to buy,” says Rick. “There is nothing stopping them from making a strategic alliance with a broadcaster, going after new content together, thereby creating a one-two punch of traditional and streaming rights.” What do you think? iReport — Today finally we dedicate the Memorial for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.    For a moment we would like to examine what we believe Dr. Martin Luther  King was about to announce prior to his assassination and perhaps the  very reason he was indeed killed. First Slavery happened and was an  injustice to people of African Descent.  No one denies that but what was  the larger plan to keep us enslaved.  And for that matter all Americans find themselves enslaved to 30 Year Mortgages and the perceived  American Dream.   One thing we have learned from Dr. King is that we are  all in this together.  Black, White, Brown and Yellow or otherwise. Right now however we all need to focus on  people of African Descent.  In a matter of moment the First  African-American President will dedicate the Memorial for the First African American Civil Rights Leader.  But if Martin Luther King were alive and could speak from his Memorial what would he say. In the rare videos below we will examine where he was going next.   On December 10, 2010 The United Nations General Assembly adopted UN Resolution 64/169 proclaiming 2011 THE INTERNATIONAL YEAR FOR PEOPLE OF AFRICAN DESCENT. July 2011 International Goodwill  Ambassador Oscar J. Webb announced THE CIVIL RIGHTS TO PLATINUM RIGHT  JOBS MOVEMENT from Johannesburg South Africa during Nelson Mandela‘s Birthday Celebration.   Can you hear his passionate plea for Self Determination.  Here are some fact that are undeniable. It is anticipated that African-Americans will spend 1.1 Trillion dollars in 2012. African-Americans buying power makes the group the 14th largest Nation in terms of GDP. Africa’s 54 Nations hold the future of the Natural Resources for the entire world. The Resources from Africa are largely traded on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and Wall Street yet the benefit of those assets rarely reach the African-American Urban and Rural Communities.   WHAT NOW! Why the invisible chains must be broken.   I remember learning about how elephants are trained as they are  young.   A huge chain is strapped to the leg and no matter how hard the  baby elephant tries to get away he cannot.  After a period of time as it  becomes futal to get away.  The Elephant resigns himself that he cannot  break free.  The big chain is not a tiny one but the conditioning or  the mindset has been created and burned into the brain of that Elephant.   Anyone see the similarity.  1.1 Trillion in Buying Power yet we are broke largely and unable to create our own jobs, determine  our own future.  That stops today with the Dedication of the Dr. Martin  Luther King Memorial. While the Political System continues to drag down the Hope we Can Believe in Obama continues to do his job.  With an opportunity today for the Senate to take up the Jobs Act will they.  Look at the Interim Report from the White House‘s Jobs Council. To remind you here is the speech he gave on Jobs in Durham North Carolina on June 13, 2011.  Still Multi-Tasker in Chief, Obama continues to ignore the critics and quietly get the job done.  From dealing with Terrorism doing something no other President has done on their watch. This is an Interim Report that should be reviewed by both the Tea Party and Occupy Wall Street Movements. The essence On The Job of the support Small Business can expect from the White House is clear. Making it easier for Small Business to access capital from Wall Street is a step in the right direction. We would love to see and report on the Presidential Contenders and their teams reports.  Oops is there one?  Post it here if you can list a plan that any of them have from Cain to Perry or whomever the flavor of the week is.  Or do they think they can run on dragging down a President who took the Lemons that Bush and Cheney left and is making Lemonade. What we like most of all about this report is its title 5 Common Sense Initiatives to Jobs Creation.  If only we can use the Common Sense Label above being Republican, Democrat Independent, Liberal or Conservative.  I like tea and coffee and several times a day I may fall into anyone of those categories based on the issue. Here is another common sense approach for Americans of African Descent.   The Civil Rights to Platinum Rights Jobs Movement launched by International Goodwill Ambassador Oscar J. Webb.  We call him the Architect, a Booker T. Washington Leader.  Mostly Unsung I have had the pleasure to know his heart for Israel and Americans, especially those of African Descent who have gotten the short end of the stick for far too long . Why should President Obama meet with this leader? Because he is the only Civil Rights Era Business Leader who understands that to save America we need to Build Africa.  As I was studying and reviewing history I remember in 1988 when Jesse Jackson Ran for President and the pride we all feel today that Barack Obama is the President of The United States at the same time the United Nations proclaimed 2011 THE INTERNATIONAL YEAR FOR PEOPLE OF AFRICAN DESCENT. Thank you Ambassador Webb for all you do personally for the people of Israel and America.  Now is the time for the emergence of new leadership in media to get your story told.  We at WCN would not have known anything about this Resolution had it not been from you.
