Mashable's (Social) Media Summit 2010: Lessons for Nonprofits

Wednesday June 9, 2010
Yesterday, I tuned in to the live feed of Mashable's Media Summit 2010. I meant to just sample the meeting and move on, but found myself captivated for the entire day. Mashable's organizers lined up an impressive group of speakers who addressed how "new media" are impacting various aspects of our culture, from sports to government.
Here are some of the presentations that I thought had the most applicability to the nonprofit world:
  • Ricky Van Veen, founder of CollegeHumor.com, is not only a representative of the younger generation and what it is interested in, but is also an expert on how to produce videos that actually draw an audience. Van Veen organized his remarks around the 10 Myths of Branded Video:
    • Myth #1 People will watch my branded content
    • Myth #2 People will be patient
    • Myth #3 People will find my content.
    • Myth #4 The Internet is a level playing field.
    • Myth #5 We have no idea why things go viral.
    • Myth #6 Experience leads documentation
    • Myth #7 Let's build our own community and tools.
    • Myth #8 Let's keep things professional.
    • Myth #9 Traditional media is irrelevant to the web.
    • Myth #10 People will create good content for me.
Intrigued? Be sure to watch the presentation.
  • Taking Action for Social Good featured Wendy Harman of the Red Cross and Dan Rollman of URDB (Universal Record Database). Harman, naturally, spoke to the deep involvement with social media that the Red Cross has come to represent. It isn't just the big disasters that they use the magic of social media on such as the Haiti earthquake, but they are finding ways of using it for the small, localized problems as well.
Harman and Rollman teamed up to break a record by having everyone in the room text a $10 donation to the Red Cross. Some background here: URDB is the brainchild of Dan Rollman who worshiped the Guinness Book of World Records as a child. As an adult he set up a website that would keep world records and encourage new ones. If you have a chance, be sure to visit URDB.org to see the fun things they are doing. A partnership with nonprofit organizations is a new initiative, and Rollman hopes it leads to many world records being set in the name of charitable causes.
  • Chris Bruzzo of Starbucks provided the stories behind several initiatives for social good...including their get out the vote campaign in early November 2008, the holiday campaign that had people all over the world singing "All You Need Is Love," to a recent campaign to get people to use refillable mugs rather than paper cups. Bruzzo also shared how the company has built its Twitter and Facebook communities. Bruzzo emphasized that a company/organization needs to be authentic in its social media. "Don't outsource your voice," Bruzzo says.
  • Edward Norton (yes, the actor) of Crowdrise detailed the creation of this brand new site that hopes to convert grassroots activism into grassroots fundraising and vice versa. Crowdrise provides a template for individuals and organizations to build a dynamic fundraising campaign. Norton says that "Social media is about personal narrative." People are proud of what they are doing and that is what Crowdrise hopes to harness. On Crowdrise it is easy to set up a personal page that features your projects, to share those enthusiasms, and to bring in more supporters and donors to your causes. The site encourages a sense of humor and fun too. Norton said that fundraising and activism can be fun, not just dry and utilitarian.
  • Alec Ross (Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's Senior Advisor for Innovation) spoke to how social media affects foreign policy. He used the story of the young woman murdered a year ago in Iran to show how social media, citizen journalism, and the world's attention has worked to "devolve" authority from politicians to ordinary people. Ross's team at the State Department works to figure out how to harness the power of social media to support diplomatic goals. Ross said that government needs to stay just as current as its citizens.

WCN SOCIAL TRANSMEDIA AWARDS

So you have heard of Brandcasting but what is Transmedia?  Or Transmedia Brandcasting?  Its the Artist and Fan connecting to a story which is Ad supported with product placement for increased exposure on a viral basis.  It is simply a revenue opportunity when a advertiser will gain access to the fan along with the artist for a financial benefit.

THE BIRTH OF ZOE
Mother nature acted on behalf of father time. That began a train wreck of catastrophes at maximum proprotions.  Extreme quakes, tornadoes, hurricanes and volcanoes were opening up foundations in cities around the world.  The living were in grave danger. As coastal existance becomes lost to the sea, there was a tremendous loss of lives.  The combination of tornadoes, hurricanes, quakes and volcanoes created a downward vertical void that stretched along the former coastline. Spewing from all fissures the quake discahrge from the volcanic activity. Releasing a concentrated fog like mixture of poisonous gases, began the dispensing of ghamma rays.
The lost souls that were consumed by the sea were reanimated by the ghamma rays upon contact, reviving the body and enhancing that body with inhuman strength.  Also acquiring amphibious characteristics.  What was once dead is now alive.

Our story begins many, many leagues under the sea. In the underwater city called Zoe, of the planet Serene, a rich underwater dwelling for Zoanians.  A complete impregnable underwater fortress, erected to the similarity of a dry land city.

EXCERPT:
Are-Won dawns his chameleon cloak and begins his assault. Charging the enemy guards while reaching
with his left hand crossing over to his right side, he grabs his infamous laser whip.  In response to Are-Won's sudden appearance and attack the enemy guards open fire with their laser pistols. Are-Won, pouncing with cat like speed uses the whip to  deflect the bolts being fired.  Also, each masterful fling and snap of the laser whip results in  severed body parts, evisceration and faded death cries of the laser whip victims.

WCN TRANSMEDIA GROUP SPOTLIGHT-NEW MEXICO FILMAKERS HAVE A MESSAGE: SUPPORT FILMAKING

Congratulations New Mexico Film WCN Transmedia Filmmakers Award Nominiee January 2011.

SUPPORT NEW MEXICO FILMMAKERS MESSAGE

In preparation of this article and preparing the launch of the Social Transmedia Awards, I found this important Transmedia Story related to Filmmaking in New Mexico.

To full understand the impact of Piracy and the small amount of productions that get through WCN Transmedia Group recognizes this Film as a important story which more than justifies the need for a new paradigm.  Attached is a $200,000 Award from Government Bill Richardson and while support from every sector is welcome.  Can we honestly expect Filmmakers to feed their families with that.  And while I cannot back this up statistically but I would bet that is the profit from a single blockbuster film Popcorn Sales.

Social Cinema's for Indpendents where product placement and a global social networking distribution platform just makes more sense.

Join WCNTV and WCN Transmedia Groups on Linkedin to have your voice heard.  And if you support a Social Cinema on Facebook, Myspace stay tuned as we prepare the interface for Film Makers, TV Producers, Writers, Actors, and Musicians.  If Transmedia Story telling is the connection between the Fan and the Artist.  And Social Networking is global and growing in the Hundreds of Millions it only make sense to form Content Alliances with Advertisers.

I read a report yesterday where Theather Owners are starting to come together to finance films.  Another Producer was asking for $10.00 from the shows fans to help them produce the next several episodes.

I think you would agree if your a indpendent Filmmaker that there needs to be more opportunity presented by IPTV Distribution of Films.  And if IPTV is the gateway technologically, then Social Transmedia Brandcasting represents the best opportunity to create more quality films and get them to a socially connected audience on sites like Facebook and others.

New Mexico Invests $200,000 For Filmmakers Programs
Posted By admin On June 14, 2010 @ 9:41 am In Economy,Governance,Localism Features 4,United States

Governor Bill Richardson today announced his continued support for film in New Mexico by awarding an additional $200,000 to the New Mexico Filmmakers Program.

The money will be used for filmmaker training and outreach programs including the New Mexico Filmmakers Showcase, the annual New Mexico Filmmakers Conference, the New Mexico Filmmakers Resource Center and various outreach events including the upcoming Native/Hispanic Film Tour.
“The variety of programs we offer local filmmakers is unparalleled in the rest of the country,” said Governor Bill Richardson. “The accolades our filmmakers are garnering speak to our talent level and the success of our programs. This is a clear indication that this industry has taken hold here, which means more jobs and more opportunities for our people and businesses.”
Under Governor Richardson’s leadership, the New Visions/New Mexico program has awarded a total of $640,000 in production funding to forty local filmmakers from around the state. Several filmmakers have used these awards to additionally leverage thousands of dollars in outside funding, and have had their films honored in top caliber film festivals around the world including the Sundance Film Festival, the Tribeca Film Festival, and the Rome International Film Festival.
Through the New Visions program, which requires winners to provide professional services to the state as part of their contract award, local filmmakers have:
  • Instructed over 500 New Mexico film students around the state in various aspects of film
  • Trained over 100 film apprentices and interns in the production process
  • Presented their work to thousands of audience members statewide through free public screenings and Q&A sessions
  • Produced forty documentary, narrative, experimental and animated films
In addition to the New Visions program, over 65% of the award recipients from all New Mexico Filmmakers Programs have been underrepresented minorities.
Programs are offered at no charge to New Mexico residents.
